At the end of this course, the students will be able to;
- Understand the nature of rough surfaces, their topography and learn about surface characterization techniques
- Learn about the contact mechanics of rough surfaces (elastic, plastic, and elastoplastic contacts) and rough surface contact models,
- Learn about the laws of friction, mechanisms of friction, stiction, stick-slip, and contact temperature during sliding,
- Recognize the various modes of wear (adhesive, delamination, abrasive, fretting, erosive, corrosive, oxidational, etc.) and learn the factors affecting wear and how to determine ware rates,
- Understand the fundamental principles of lubrication and apply them to hydrodynamically lubricated surfaces to determine the pressure distribution, load-carrying capacity, coefficient of friction, oil flow rate required, and temperature increase.
- Understand the fundamental principles of thermohydrodynamic lubrication to determine the temperature distribution in the lubricant film under variable viscosity conditions,
- Learn about the fundamental principles of elastohydrodynamic lubrication by considering the effects of deformations on lubricated concentrated contacts and to determine the oil film thickness and the deformation of surfaces.
