Course Objectives

1.Understand basic mechanics of rock slope failure, geological data collection and graphical presentation of this data, effect of ground water flow, permeability, seismic activity on slope stability

2. Elicit slope failure modes (circular,, plane, wedge, toppling, fall) and methods for stability analyses of each mode

3. Comprehend economic and planning aspects of pit slope design, related uncertainties, hazards and risks

4. Understand probabilistic and deterministic rock slope stability methods

5. Grasp limit equilibrium and numerical methods in rock slope stability analyses

5.Work in teams to solve a rock slope design problem using deterministic and probabilistic methods using numerical and/or limit equilibrium approaches
