The course will provide students with the understanding of pavement design and analysis process. Students will gain skills in using the conventional as well as state-of-the-art performance based design methodologies. At the end of the course, the following course objectives are expected to be achieved:
- understand the difference between structural performance and functional performance of pavements,
- learn fundamental types of distresses in flexible and rigid pavements,
- gain knowledge of engineering properties of pavement materials, methods to characterize them and their effects on pavement performance,
- learn guidelines on conducting traffic analyses in the pavement design process,
- learn methods to determine stresses, strains and deflections in flexible and rigid pavements,
- gain skills in using design specifications for flexible and rigid pavements based on empirical and mechanistic-empirical methods,
- learn how to conduct life cycle cost analyses for flexible and rigid pavements,
- learn maintenance and rehabilitation techniques for flexible and rigid pavements,
