The course will provide students with the understanding of pavement design and analysis process. Students will gain skills in using the conventional as well as state-of-the-art performance based design methodologies. At the end of the course, the following course objectives are expected to be achieved: 

• understand the difference between structural performance and functional performance of      pavements,
• learn fundamental types of distresses in flexible and rigid pavements,
• gain knowledge of engineering properties of pavement materials, methods to characterize them and their effects on pavement performance,
• learn guidelines on conducting traffic analyses in the pavement design process,
• learn methods to determine stresses, strains and deflections in flexible and rigid pavements,
• gain skills in using design specifications for flexible and rigid pavements based on          empirical and mechanistic-empirical methods,
• learn how to conduct life cycle cost analyses for flexible and rigid pavements,
• learn maintenance and rehabilitation techniques for flexible and rigid pavements,
