Course Objectives

The aim is to help students acquire an understanding of some of the basic concepts of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) that will be needed as a foundation for advanced courses in physical oceanography. To provide an introduction to the fundamental concepts, analysis techniques, and canonical solutions of GFD. The emphasis is on the fundamentals of fluid dynamics with a twist of atmosphere/oceans. This topics include the the equations of motions for rotating stratified flow and their application to the oceanic dynamics, Ekman layer dynamics, potential vorticity dynamics, wind driven oceanic circulation, geostrophic adjustment, and baroclinic instability.
