Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the students are expected to:

1) Have a general knowledge of Ottoman women in the periods from the 1500s to the end of the Ottoman Empire in 1922 with the abolition of the Ottoman Sultanate;

2) Increase their understanding of the status of Ottoman women in private and public life, more specifically, their existence in the social, economic, political, and work life;

3) Compare Ottoman women coming from different ethnic and religious groups and seek similarities and differences.

4) Accumulate examples of the experiences of Ottoman women in the spheres of education, literature and press;  

5) Learn about their struggles to survive during the wars and their engagement with the women’s movement.

6) Have a general knowledge of the experiences of Ottoman women after 1922 with examples chosen mainly from Turkey.
