This is the first course in the basic Italian language sequence.

The objectives of the course are to develop basic communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Emphasis will be placed on vocabulary expansion, basic grammar acquisition and basic comprehension.

Students will learn how to

• greet people
• introduce yourself
• say the numbers
• say the alphabet
• pronounce the italian sounds and intonation
• ask nationality
•  exchange personal information
•  ask price and directions
• describe themselves, their families and others
• describe experiences and events
• ask and giving the time
• talk about  working places and professions
• make questions (How are you? What do you do?…) formally and informally 
• learn vocabulary of food and bar
• days and months
• speak about weather conditions
• speak about their own houses and the furnitures
• express opinions on everyday topics and related to the sphere of their interests

Students will study:

•  present tense of essere and avere (to be, to have).
•  nouns and adjectives: gender and number (masculine, feminine, plural and singular), regular and few irregulars.
• present tense of regular verbs (-are, -ere, -ire) and some irregular verbs
• adjectives of nationality
• definite and indefinite articles
• present tense of verbs in -isco (capire, preferire, finire).
• present tense of modal verbs
• introduction of some Italian prepositions
• reflexive verbs
• possessive adjectives
• verbo ‘piacere’ (I like)
• compound prepositions
