Course Objectives

This course is an introduction to the biological basis of psychological processes and behavior. Topics addressed in this course include: function of the nervous system, neuroanatomy, the physiological basis of learning and memory, the use of animals in research, endocrine system, research methods in animal studies, neurological disorders as well as internal regulation. This course also covers other basic concepts, findings and research in the field of biological psychology.

1. The relationship between the mind and the body

2. The structure and function of the nervous system on anatomical, cellular, and molecular levels

3. Basic brain structures and related functions

4. Principles of psychopharmacology, sites of drug action, the role of neuromodulators and neurotransmitters

5. Research methodologies used in physiological psychological studies

6. Memory and learning in terms of biological and chemical events

7. The human endocrine system

8. The neurological pathways related to hunger and thirst

9. Neurological Disorders

10. Mood Disorders and Schizophrenia
