This seminar is designed for Ph.D. students who concentrate on international relations of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. One of the main aims of the course is to identify the linkages and interactions between domestic politics on the one hand and regional and global politics on the other. Thus, topics such as nationalism or political Islam will be analyzed through their domestic and regional/global dimensions. Another aim of the course is to identify different approaches to the topics at hand. The course, indeed, starts with a general discussion on approaches to the Middle East studies and IR of the Middle East. This focus on theoretical perspectives will also be kept in the discussions of more specific topics listed in the syllabus.
