Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to develop the students’ ability to form an insight and aptitude in spatial, formal  issues in urban space design. The framework is comprised of various instants in the history of city building and deals with the background and triggering forces behind the movements and issues that have changed the formal and notional components of settlements. The method to convey such a framework is through direct lecturing accompanied by visual material. Since issues related to the form and its design requires visual aptitude and graphical skills the students are encouraged to iterate what they are taught by graphical means. That is, they are asked to interpret what they learn in terms of drawings. This is assumed to be achieved via short sketch exercises in session, i.e., during the class. The main goal is to enhance the students inventory in terms of the formal issues (related to form) and problems that they may come across in their professional lives. In that, they are expected to come up with better and innovative solutions to urban spatial problems. The social objective is to achieve livable urban spaces.

Students will be evaluated through their in session sketch drawings, coupled with mid-term and final examinations which in turn are also in the form of drawings.
