Upon completion of this course students will be able to describe the origins of novel and discuss the breadth of its definition as a literary form. Students will be able to analyze the basic elements of fiction and their use in the novels selected for reading in the class. Additionally, students will be able to discuss the novels read in class in the context of their time including as commentary and/or criticism on human nature and human social structures.
