Course Objectives

This course is designed to introduce the students to the twentieth century novel with a focus on modernist and postmodernist fiction. Throughout the semester, students will learn to identify the formal and thematic features of the modernist and postmodernist novel, discuss the historical development of the genre in the twentieth century, establish connections between the historical, cultural and philosophical contexts of a novel and its formal features and use narratological tools and literary theory in the analysis of a novel.
