Course Learning Outcomes


1. Students will learn about the key concepts and analytical tools of systems engineering

2. Students will learn the importance and the aim of modeling in environmental decision making

3. Students will learn the basic steps of development and application of mathematical models for simulations of environmental systems, such as problem formulation, data gathering, calibration, and sensitivity analyses

4. Students will master the application of general continuity equation for various environmental systems (natural and engineered), system chemistry, input and boundary conditions through example problems

5. Students will learn how to develop mathematical models for various environmental systems, e.g., related to water quality and waste management.

6. Students will learn how to apply the key principals of system synthesis and solution techniques of model equations for specific environmental systems and how to use various computational software packages.

7. Students will learn the steps of development and application of system simulation models and how to use modeling as a tool for environmental design and management purposes.
