Course Learning Outcomes

Through the course, the students will develop

(a) an understanding of the system of spoken communication, and

(b) an understanding of the socio-pragmatic and linguistic aspects of spoken interaction through speech act analyses, studying cross-cultural differences in spoken discourse, and linguistic analyses of the lexico-grammatical aspects of spoken discourse (e.g. discourse markers). Students will also

(c) undertake tasks that range from transcribing extended discourse to analysing conversational management, as well as constructing data sets of spoken interaction for cross-cultural analysis, and conducting cross-linguistic, corpus-based analyses of spoken interaction.
