Course Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

• Understand the different methodological approaches in the field of international political economy, and their implications for understanding the relationship between the state and the market in the context of development

• Analyze the alternative strategies of capitalist development and modes of integration into the world economy adopted by countries in the Global South, with a focus on Latin America, South Asia, and East Asia

• Examine the historical, social, and political factors that have shaped the development trajectories and international economic relations of countries in the Global South, and their implications for contemporary political economy

• Compare and contrast the political economy of development in different regions of the Global South, and identify the similarities and differences between them

• Evaluate the challenges and opportunities facing countries in the Global South in the context of globalization, economic liberalization, and the rise of emerging markets, and their implications for global economic governance and international cooperation

• Critically assess the policy debates and controversies surrounding the political economy of development in the Global South, and their implications for poverty reduction, sustainable development, and global justice
