The aim of this course is to give an overview of block ciphers, their design criteria, basic cryptanalysis methods and implementation issues. The two prominent block ciphers will be studied throughout the course; Data Encryption Standard and Advanced Encryption Standard. Block cipher modes of operation, block cipher based message authentication codes and authenticated encryption will be explained.
