At the end of the course the students are expected to have a good grounding in bilingualism theories and a critical understanding of their relevance to research, language in society and education.
- understand and discuss different definitions of bilingualism;
- explore and evaluate different methods of 'measuring' bilingualism;
- understand the basics of how bilinguals learn and use their languages in different situations;
- understand cognitive differences and similarities between bilinguals and monolinguals;
- understand how society can contribute to, or hinder, bilingualism.
