At the end of the course the students are expected to have a good grounding in bilingualism theories and a critical understanding of their relevance to research, language in society and education.

• understand and discuss different definitions of bilingualism;
• explore and evaluate different methods of 'measuring' bilingualism;
• understand the basics of how bilinguals learn and use their languages in different situations;
• understand cognitive differences and similarities between bilinguals and monolinguals;
• understand how society can contribute to, or hinder, bilingualism.
