The overall objective of the course is to enable students to comprehend ideas, opinions and facts in academic texts, reflect on ideas and facts in oral and written expressions, apply rules of academic reading and writing and develop students’ skills in language and higher-order thinking skills.
English 101 is aimed at developing academic reading and writing skills which students will be using throughout their studies in university. These skills are presented and practiced in the context of reading, listening, and writing. However, classroom discussions will also be conducted, which means that academic speaking skills will also be practiced. English 101 is a learner centered course. This means that learning depends on the students’ participation and involvement in classroom tasks. In other words, students will be learning through doing activities, not merely by listening or being lectured.
