Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
• Understand the regulatory framework related to safe containment of wastes.
• Evaluate the mechanical and hydraulic properties of soil, solid waste, and geosynthetics.
• Quantify the mechanical and hydraulic properties needed to satisfy design criteria of projects
involving clay barriers, unsaturated soil barriers, and geosynthetic barriers.
• Select, justify the selection, and design base liner systems, final cover systems, and liquid
collection systems for municipal and hazardous waste as well as mining disposal sites.
• Master concepts in unsaturated soils related to moisture migration and apply these concepts
to the design of alternative cover systems.
• Apply stability, water balance, and contaminant transport concepts needed in the design of
waste containment facilities.
• Identify the types, advantages, and disadvantages of different methods of remediation and
stabilization of contaminated ground.
