Having completed this course, the student will be able to

• identify drill-site structures, hardware/equipment, their functions and operational practices
• identify drilling crew and drilling team members and their functions
• evaluate formation pore and fracture pressures
• recognize rheological properties of drilling fluids
• design drilling fluid with proper weight and viscosity
• recognize and calculate pressure losses in the drill-string and the annulus
• calculate pump rates for hydraulic hole cleaning and well control
• design the cement job

These concepts and skills will prepare the student for the second semester where more advance subjects will be discussed:

• Drill string and casing design
• analysis of wellbore and casing stresses
• completion of a basic drilling program
