Course Objectives

The course, following a consise review of the basics of strenthening mechanism concentrates on case studies where each of the basic strenthening mechanisms are elaborated upon. Of necessity the course combines processing details so that the material is designed with features making best use of strenthening mechanism in question. At the end of the course, students should  be able to have a grasp of knowledge on

- The limit of strenthening possible in materials
- Requirement for  acceptable toughness
- Material Design for Polycrystal strenthening
- Material design for dislocational strenthening
- Material design for grain boundary strenthening
- Material design for solid solution strenthening
- Material design for particle strenthening
- How to  combine different strengthening  mechanisms
