Course Objectives

This upper-level undergraduate course aims to make an introduction to economic growth, a field in economics whose main concern is to study the determinants of the enhancements in the living standards of households in an economy over an extended period. Hence, the course will have an emphasis on the explanations of long-run growth rather than on the treatment of short- or medium-term economic fluctuations, which mainly fall in the realm of macroeconomics. The course is designed to capture the richness of alternative explanations on the sources of economic growth by discussing not only the mainstream growth theories but also the Keynesian and Marxian growth theories.
