Course Objectives

The primary goal of this course is to develop a critical awareness of the ways in which the notions of sex and gender are constructed and situated in East Asia.  Throughout this course, students will read and discuss literature on gender from the standpoints of anthropology, sociology, cultural geography and other disciplines.  Through readings, films and class discussions students will begin thinking about gender in new and critical ways.  At the end of this course, students should be able to: 1) provide a comprehensive review of theories regarding gender; 2) conduct cross-cultural research on the topic; 3) reflect global gender issues to their own culture.
