By the end of this course students will acquire a basic understanding on one of the core areas of physical chemistry. The course aims to establish a microscopic viewpoint on processes such as chemical reactions, diffusion and flow of charge in electrochemical cells. Topics covered are electrolyte solutions, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, transport properties, chemical reaction dynamics and processes on solid surfaces. This course uses relevant portions of thermodynamics, quantum chemistry, and statistical mechanics when necessary.
The course also provides training of laboratory skills and techniques: characterization of thermodynamic properties and chemical kinetics of selected chemical reactions using instrumental methods and computations.
