Participants in this course will learn:

- political, linguistic and economic reasons that led to the emergence of English as a global/international language
- different models of World Englishes
- different roles played by different varieties of English around the world
- sociolinguistic features of the varieties of English around the world
- the factors that might influence the future of English
- the pedagogical implications for teaching and learning English as an international language
