This course surveys the developments in the Turkish political system chronologically since the early Republican Era in Turkish political history.  The major objective is to understand the forces of change and continuity in Turkish politics by tracing its turning points in democratization. The reading material and the lectures focus on the periods of democratic breakdowns and transitions, political party system, state-society relations, the role of the military in politics, political leaders, and ideological and constitutional developments drawing on various sources.
