To convey the basic principles of anaerobic biotechnology to the students studying Environmental and Chemical Engineering as well as Biotechnology by using theoretical background, case studies and recent literature on the subject.
To this purpose:
Students will be introduced to the advantages and disadvantages of anaerobic over aerobic biotechnology by employing scientific and engineering analysis.
Topics like basic process microbiology; kinetics and stoichiometry of anaerobic reactions; anaerobic treatability protocol; operational considerations; reactor configurations and comparisons; biomass immobilization; process design; alkalinity, nutrient and trace metal requirements; toxicity response and microbial acclimation; energy producing aspects of anaerobic systems., etc. will be covered in class.
