The aim of this course is to analyse different aspects of consumption practices in contemporary societies. It first outlines the rise of the consumer culture from a temporal and theoretical perspective. Then, step by step, it examines the most frequently explored topics/perspectives (i.e. political consumption, status consumption, sustainability, material culture...). Each week is followed by a week for ‘case studies’ which critically explores how such debates have been problematized in empirical studies. The dynamics of the Turkish consumption fields will be incorporated to the discussions.
