Course Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this course, the student will be able to:

Identify power and torque characteristics of an internal combustion engine by fitting appropriate curves to experimental data.

Identify the elements of power train of road vehicles and interpret their functions.

Identify and predict the resistances to the motion of a road vehicle.

Analyze the effect of engine characteristics, gear box and tires on the tractive effort.

Predict the maximum speed and the acceleration performance of a road vehicle.

Predict the power and slip limited gradability of a road vehicle.

Predict fuel consumption of a road vehicle.

Analyze braking dynamics of a road vehicle.

Estimate preliminary reduction ratios for the gearbox and for the differential of a road vehicle.

Identify different measures to assess the performance of a road vehicle.

Interpret recent developments about the course content by performing a literature survey or develop a computer code to assess the performance of a road vehicle
