Course Objectives

To overall objective is to develop an understanding of bloom dynamics of harmful algae, which includes the phases of bloom progression and the succession of phytoplankton species. The specific goals are to introduce HAB species and their associated syndromes; to determine quantitative relationships among the biological, physical, and chemical parameters with respect to the bloom-forming species; to discuss the role of physical processes for harmful algal bloom initiation, and nutrients with respect to harmful algal events in areas subject to coastal enrichment; to understand the importance of grazing and bacterial activities in the development of a harmful bloom;  to describe the identification and enumeration techniques as well as toxin detection methods; and to describe associated management, prevention and control efforts.
