To understand the soil classification, components and their functions in pavement structures. To evaluate soil roadbed conditions, select base and subbase materials and identify appropriate test methods to characterize them. To gain knowledge of asphalt cement types, their production, grading systems and rheological properties that affect pavement performance. To have ability to select aggregate, asphalt cement and prepare a mix design satisfying the requirements of standard specifications. To have knowledge of Portland cement types, their production and certain mechanical properties relevant to rigid pavement performance. To understand the methods to select aggregate, water-cement ratio and identify significant concrete properties relevant to rigid pavement performance and prepare mix design satisfying the requirements of standard specifications. To gain understanding of material variability and how to determine material variability using statistical methods and its effects on pavement design parameters.
