Course Objectives

This course aims to give students a solid grounding in Probability and Statistics. Students will be introduced to probability theory and inference theory.  Topics to be covered include the notions of probability and conditional probability, discrete and continuous distributions of random variables, basic estimation methods, hypothesis tesing confidence intervals, convergence theorems, law of large numbers, central limit theorem, analysis of variance and regression analysis. Students will learn the relevant theory and gain the ability to formulate and solve practical problems in Civil Engineering.

The module covers both the completion of mathematical calculations by hand as well as by the use of software and the interpretation of quantitative results. The module will introduce students to the use and application of statistical techniques using free and open source software R.
