Course Objectives

1. Learn physical and chemical properties of crude oils and natural gases.

2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the sedimentary basins and petroleum system models in various types of sedimentary basins.

3. Understand how hydrocarbons occur in source rocks, migrate and accumulate in reservoir rock, how confined in trap structures at subsurface.

4. Have a basic understanding of geological, geophysical and geochemical methods used in the search for hydrocarbon reserves.

5. Learn details on how to begin evaluating a hydrocarbon play and developing a prospect.

6. Develop skills in correlating reservoir rock layers and recognizing normal faults, reverse faults and unconformities from log data.

7. Develop ability to construct subsurface contour maps and estimating the volumetrics.
