Having completed this course, the student will be able to
- identify drill-site structures, hardware/equipment, their functions and operational practices
- identify drilling crew and drilling team members and their functions
- evaluate formation pore and fracture pressures
- recognize rheological properties of drilling fluids
- design drilling fluid with proper weight and viscosity
- recognize and calculate pressure losses in the drill-string and the annulus
- calculate pump rates for hydraulic hole cleaning and well control
- design the cement job
These concepts and skills will prepare the student for the second semester where more advance subjects will be discussed:
- Drill string and casing design
- analysis of wellbore and casing stresses
- completion of a basic drilling program
