Course Objectives

An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering

• Demonstrate an understanding of inter-atomic bonding and molecules as well as atomic bonding in solids
• Describe the difference in atomic/molecular structure between crystalline and  non-crystalline materials
• Identify crystallographic directions and planes in terms of structure of crystals relevant for both conventional and advanced ceramics
• Describe atomic mechanisms of diffusion in ionic solid states such as ceramic materials and develop equations for steady-state and non-steady state diffusion
• Apply phase equilibrium thermodynamics principles to solid state phase equilibrium problems and demonstrate an understanding of ceramic phase equilibrium diagrams
• Describe the fundamental concepts of structure-property relationships for advanced ceramics

An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams

Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in teams in the context of a term project concerned with an advanced ceramic material

An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility

Should develop an awareness of environmental and ethical issues in the processing and manufacturing of both traditional and advanced ceramic materials

An ability to communicate effectively

Actively work in teams during planning, organization and execution of a term project. This will also involve further development of presentation and report writing skills

A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning

During the preparation and development of the term project recognize that advanced ceramics in the context of nano technology is only in an infant stage and has a long ways to go perhaps covering a life-long spectrum.

A knowledge of contemporary issues

Incorporate environmental concerns and safety during the analysis of synthesis and manufacturing of an advanced ceramic material for the term project
