Course Objectives

At the end of this course students will

(1) use linguistic terms and concepts appropriately where/when necessary

(2) present and explain the underlying principles and mechanisms allowing human communication

(3) compare and contrast the difference between human and sign languages, human and animal communication; artificial and natural languages

(4) explain the biological basis of the language in the human brain

(5) examine the features of various texts using discourse analysis criteria

(6) explain how factors such as context, characteristics of interlocutors, background knowledge affect our perception and interpretation of various linguistic expressions

(7) analyse linguistic data
