Oceanographic data span a wide range of variables, parameters, formats, volumes, and spatio-temporal scales. Developing platform-independent computing skills and gaining experience in the utilization of related open access software and tools are essential for graduate studies in marine sciences. A formal introductory training, at an early stage, in oceanographic data analysis and visualization with an emphasis on the computational aspects is expected to facilitate graduate research while delivering a foundation for advanced concepts and techniques.
